Old Glendale windows: non-standard is the standard

In homes from the 1910s–30s, windows were built in place, not ordered from a catalog: openings are "almost identical", frames are wood, and after a century the corners are no longer square. What that means for blinds and curtain rods:

• Measurement decides everything. Internet-sized blinds in an old opening often end up with gaps — or do not fit at all. We measure every opening at three points; old windows are rarely identical even within one room.
• Mounting goes into the wood of the frame or into a stud. The plaster around old openings crumbles under anchors; the jamb and header hold for good.
• A rod with heavy drapes goes into studs only: a five-foot rod has serious leverage, and on lath it works weak anchors loose within a month.

The sun here is mountain sun — south and west windows in the foothills get hit hard, so blackout blinds in bedrooms are our most common install.

A closet organizer into an existing niche or onto a wall: we assemble it, anchor it into studs (mandatory in older homes), level it on the uneven foothill floors, and adjust the doors and drawers.
