A reminder people forget: a shelf 80 inches tall and 12 deep is the most tip-prone piece of furniture there is. Empty it stands; loaded, it falls from a push. We nail the back panel around the full perimeter (that is what holds rigidity), anchor to a wall stud, and advise heavy volumes to the bottom. In lath-walled houses anchoring goes only into a stud — and finding one in a 1915 wall is a skill of its own.
