Hundred-year-old windows measure differently

Pasadena’s Victorians and Craftsmans mean tall casement windows, hand-built wood frames and openings where a "right angle" is a historical concept. Our approach:

• Three-point measurement of every opening — windows in one room of a 1910 house easily differ by half an inch, and catalog-sized blinds go up with gaps.
• Mounting into the wood of the frame or into a stud, never into the plaster: around old openings it crumbles under anchors.
• Rods at height. With 9–10-foot ceilings, floor-length drapes from a high rod look magnificent — but a five-foot rod with heavy fabric at that height demands studs and proper hardware, or it comes off the wall within a season. The ladder and the laser come with us.

Single-pane glass gives up heat in winter and lets it in come summer: heavy drapes and cellular shades here are about comfort as much as light. We will suggest what fits each window.

Closet systems — for houses built without closets

A 1915 Craftsman means one or two tiny closets for the whole house: built-in storage was not built then. A closet system is the answer: we measure the niche or wall, assemble, anchor into studs (with lath there is no other way), and adjust. Tall ceilings allow full-height systems — a rare advantage of the old stock.

Doors with history

Handles and locks in century-old doors: non-standard mortises, settled frames. We replace and adjust with hand-fitting on site — a 1920s door closes in one motion after us. And if the original hardware is alive, we preserve it and bring it back into service: it is part of the house’s character.
