A TV in a century-old house is an advanced problem

Pasadena is the oldest housing stock in our area, and most of our mounts here go into walls from 1900–1930. What that changes:

Lath instead of drywall. The toggle bolt that holds a TV in a new build rips out of plastered lath along with a chunk of the wall — and you are lucky if the TV is not attached at the time. We mount into studs only. In homes of this era they are not on 16-inch centers, and a detector on lath gives false positives — reading it is a skill of its own, and we have it.

Brick fireplaces. A Craftsman living room is built around the fireplace, and a TV above it is everyone’s first wish. We look honestly: brick or chimney flue, whether there is anything to anchor to, whether the mantel traps heat. If it cannot be done well above the fireplace, we say so straight and find a better wall. Brick means masonry anchors and the +$40 visible in the price list up front.

Tall ceilings tempt people to mount high. Don’t: the center of the screen belongs at seated eye level. In a room with a 10-foot ceiling that looks unusually low — and watches perfectly.

Student rentals near PCC and Caltech get the no-trace treatment: studs, minimal holes, spackle at move-out — the deposit survives.

Frequently asked questions

House from 1911, the plaster crumbles at the sight of a screw.

We know that wall. We will find the studs, mount it for good, and patch the wall’s old wounds on the way.

I want a 65-inch above the fireplace.

We will assess on site: structure, heat, height. An honest verdict — and the best alternative if above the fireplace is a no.

Cables running down the plaster look terrible.

A paintable raceway matched to the wall is included. In-wall wiring in lath is its own conversation — we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.

A rental — the landlady worries about her walls.

We understand her: the house is a century old. Two to four precise holes into studs; spackle at move-out. The wall fares better than under nails for a shelf.
