A family city — kids’ assembly without compromise
Half of our Torrance visits are children’s furniture, and we assemble it by rules nobody gets to economize on:
- Bunk beds — every through-bolt torqued to spec, ladder and rails tested under load, top-mattress thickness checked (at least 5 inches of rail above it). An under-torqued bunk does not creak — it quietly loosens with the child’s every move.
- Cribs — strictly by the manual, base height by age, and no drivers on full torque in a child’s threads.
- Dressers — the anti-tip strap into a wall stud: always, free, no discussion. This is the subject of the federal STURDY standard, and in a city full of kids it is the main one.
Fast ranches and two exceptions
Post-war single-story ranches on slab foundations are the best assembly conditions in our area: level floors, standard studs, wide openings. A dresser closer to 45 minutes, a bedroom closer to 2.5 hours.
The exceptions: Old Torrance (laid out in 1912 — lath behind the plaster, anchoring only into studs) and Hollywood Riviera (slopes: cabinets leveled, terrace furniture assembled on stainless — the sea breeze is next door).
The garage — a second apartment
Shelving, storage systems, workbenches — anchored to the garage wall (concrete gets anchors, framed walls get studs). One rule: heavy low, light high — in a seismic zone a loaded rack must stand immovable.
Del Amo is ten minutes away: bought the furniture — we often assemble the next day.
Frequently asked questions
A big-box bunk bed with a 40-page manual.
Our bread and butter: full torque and a load test.
A dresser for the kids’ room — is the strap really necessary?
Really. A child on an open drawer is a lever; the dresser tips forward. A strap into a stud closes it. Free.
Garage: racks on a concrete wall.
Concrete anchors, heavy things low. Tell us the wall length and we will suggest a configuration.
A 1920s house in Old Torrance.
Lath — we know it: studs by detector, plaster-rated hardware.
Job not on the list?
Describe it, add a photo — a pro will call you back with a price.
