A house with no driveway is our ordinary day
Half of Venice’s addresses cannot be reached by car: canal houses (paths and bridges only), walk-streets with no roadway, entrances through the back alley. We park on the perimeter and carry by hand — included in the visit, not a "difficulty surcharge". We have carried a sofa box across a canal bridge more than once; write a couple of lines about the access (which street, which alley, the gate code) and we arrive on time without circling.
Anything large for the narrow old bungalows gets checked in advance: a photo of the door and the box dimensions — an honest yes/no before you buy.
Furniture that no catalog lists
Venice shops its own way: flea-market vintage, custom from local makers, Abbot Kinney finds, furniture from a Bali container. None of it comes with manuals — the "Something else" position: photos of the parts and hardware → a price → assembly with no improvisation. Rare hardware gets rare care.
Compact and outdoor
Old-lot studios take Murphy beds (ceiling measured, anchoring into studs — in century walls a delicate matter) and convertibles. Courtyards and rooftops take outdoor sets on stainless: the ocean is four blocks off, and black hardware blooms in a season.
Frequently asked questions
A canal house — delivery refused the bridge.
We will carry it — tell us how many boxes and which side to come from.
A sixties wardrobe from the flea market, hardware in a coffee jar.
Photos of the jar and the parts — a price — gentle assembly. Our favorite genre.
A 270-square-foot studio with an old ceiling — I want a Murphy.
We measure the ceiling (it needs 94 inches) and the walls: in a century bungalow anchoring goes only into studs. We will tell you honestly whether it fits.
The courtyard furniture keeps rusting.
Stainless, correct torque, a seasonal retighten. It will outlast.
