A hillside house: when delivery leaves the boxes at the bottom

If you live south of Ventura Blvd, you know the scene. The furniture truck cannot turn around on the hill street, the driver unloads at the garage — and from there it is two flights of stairs down to the door, and the 90-pound sofa box becomes your problem.

That is our routine work. We carry it down and assemble it: the hand carry along hillside stairs is part of the visit — just mention in the request that the house is on a hill, and we arrive as a pair with the time budgeted. A seven-foot box of bed rails goes down a turning staircase not "somehow" but a specific way, and we know that way.

The second hillside particular is the floors. A 1960s house on piers settles over half a century, and a quarter to half an inch of slope across a wardrobe is normal. Casework — wardrobes, sliding units, dressers — gets shimmed to level before tightening. Sliding wardrobes especially: their doors always roll to the low point, and on an unleveled floor the unit simply does not work.

On the flats north of Ventura everything is easier: single-story ranches, level floors, predictable drywall — assembly goes fast there.

The city that remembers 1994

The Northridge epicenter was a few miles from here, and Sherman Oaks took it hard. Nobody here needs convincing about anchoring furniture — locals saw with their own eyes what an unanchored wardrobe does to an apartment.

So we will simply list what we anchor always, at no charge:

• Dressers and tall wardrobes — strap or bracket into a stud.
• Bookshelves — back panel around the perimeter plus anchoring.
• TV walls and the TVs themselves — studs only.
• Mirrors over 50 pounds — treated as structural fixings, two people.

Bedrooms and closets — the defining genre

Sherman Oaks orders rooms, not nightstands: a storage bed, a dresser, two nightstands, a wardrobe or closet system. At flat per-item prices a full order comes out clearly cheaper than hourly handymen — and it all gets assembled in one visit, with the mountain of cardboard hauled off.

Closet systems are a particular pride: we assemble the sections, join them, level them (mandatory in the hills), and anchor them. A big system is 2.5–3.5 hours with two people, and after us the doors close true.
